This morning I woke up to news of a murder back home. Don't get me wrong, I read about murder everyday in the news but when it hits close to home it's more difficult to wrap your head around it.
The news was about a couple shot dead in their home. The male victim went to my university and at one point, we were taking the same classes for business management. After graduating, he established himself as a film critic. His girlfriend, on the other hand, was a freelance film journalist from Slovenia.
It was a senseless crime. According to police reports the assailants escaped with some of the couple's jewelry and a laptop. Some jewelry and a laptop in exchange for the innocent lives of two young people? Every time I think about it I shake my head in disbelief.
What has become of this world? Granted that life has been hard these days, but poverty is never an excuse to do evil. I only pray that people who are stricken with hardships will think twice before they go to desperate measures to survive, and that their survival should not be at the expense of an innocent life.
